JDM Reels: A Fact-Based Guide to Japanese Fishing Reels

Built only from Shimano and Daiwa official spec tables in Japan and the US (503 Japanese sizes and 134 US SKUs, checked 2026-10-13), with the makers' official list prices. No shop prices, ratings or hands-on impressions.

What "JDM reels" means

JDM stands for Japanese domestic market. A JDM reel is a model made for sale in Japan and listed on the maker's Japanese website, with Japanese size codes, product codes and JAN barcodes. Shimano and Daiwa sell many series in both Japan and the US under the same name (for example Stella, Vanquish, Twin Power, Stradic, Exist and Certate), but the Japanese range often has more sizes, and the Japanese and US tables do not always list the same figures.

Short version: match the exact size code and the official numbers, not only the series name. A Japanese size may have no US equivalent at all.

How Japanese and US versions differ (from the official tables)

1. Some Japanese sizes have no US model

Of the 503 Japanese sizes we checked, 116 have a US SKU with the same size code. The other 130 have no same-code US model; for 18 of them we show the closest US size. Examples of Japan-only sizes: Shimano Vanquish C2500S, Shimano Vanquish C2500SXG, Shimano Twin Power C2000SHG, Shimano Twin Power C2500SXG, Shimano Stella C2000SHG, Shimano Stella C2500S, Shimano Stradic C2000SHG, Shimano Stradic C2500S, Daiwa Exist LT2000S-H, Daiwa Exist LT2500S, Daiwa Airity LT2000S-H, Daiwa Airity LT2500S, Daiwa Certate FC LT2000S-H, Daiwa Certate FC LT2500S. 2. Size codes are written differently

  • Shimano: the US SKU usually keeps the Japanese size code and adds a series prefix and a model-letter suffix, e.g. Japanese 22 Stella C3000XG = US STLC3000XGFK. US ranges in our data: Vanquish C, Twinpower FE, Stella FK, Stradic FM, CALCUTTA CONQUEST 100-200 A, CALCUTTA CONQUEST DC A, METANIUM MGL B, METANIUM DC A, ANTARES B, MIRAVEL A, NASCI FD, SEDONA FJ, TWINPOWER SW C, CURADO DC 200, ALDEBARAN BFS, TWINPOWER XD FB, VANFORD A, ULTEGRA FD, EXSENCE B, STELLA SW D, SAHARA FJ, NEXAVE FJ, SPHEROS SW, OCEA JIGGER, SIENNA FG, FX FC, OCEA JIGGER CT, OCEA JIGGER LD, CALCUTTA CONQUEST MD.
  • Daiwa: several US SKUs add a "D" to the size where the Japanese code has none or has "S" (e.g. EXIGLT2000D-P, EXIGLT4000D, EXIGLT5000D-C). We treat these as "closest" sizes, not the same reel, unless the codes are identical.

4. Same name, different figures

Where the US range has no same-code size, the closest US SKU can list a different drag, weight or gear ratio. Examples:

Ways anglers outside Japan buy JDM reels

We do not recommend specific shops and do not list shop prices (each reel page shows the maker's own list price in Japan, before consumption tax). These are the general routes, and what to check for each:

  • Japanese online stores that ship abroad. Some Japanese tackle retailers accept international orders and ship directly. Shipping options, which countries they ship to and whether reels can be sent by air differ by shop; read the shop's own shipping page.
  • Proxy buying and package-forwarding services. For shops that ship only within Japan, a forwarding service gives you a Japanese address, receives the parcel and sends it on. You pay the shop and the service separately, and the service's rules on what it can ship apply.
  • Shops outside Japan that import JDM stock. Some retailers in other countries stock Japanese-market versions alongside local ones. Ask which version (Japanese or local) you are buying.

Before you order

  • Confirm the exact Japanese size code, and where possible the product code or JAN on our size pages, so you know you are getting the Japanese version.
  • Import duties and taxes depend on your country; check your customs authority.
  • We have not confirmed how Shimano or Daiwa handle warranty or repair for Japan-market reels used abroad. Ask the maker or the seller before buying.
  • Spare and custom spools: Shimano lists Yumeya spool types and Daiwa's SLP Works lists compatible series. See official spool compatibility.
